Comparison
Papyrus BPApp vs Tally Prime / Tally ERP 9
Tally is the de-facto accounting platform in 80%+ of Indian SMB paper mills — well-loved by CAs, well-priced, GST-ready. But Tally is accounting software, not a manufacturing ERP. It doesn't run production, doesn't optimize deckle, doesn't track OEE, doesn't manage quality samples, and doesn't do payroll at mill scale. Papyrus BPApp fills the gap that every growing mill eventually hits — without forcing you to abandon what already works in Tally.
Papyrus BPApp
India-first, paper-first, integrated
Complete manufacturing ERP purpose-built for Indian paper mills. 44 modules covering everything Tally doesn't (production planning, deckle optimization, quality, maintenance, HR/payroll, shop floor, AI, IoT) — plus integrated GST-compliant finance that's as auditor-friendly as Tally. Can be deployed alongside Tally during transition.
Tally
India's most popular accounting software
Tally Prime is the leading Indian accounting software with ~2 million businesses using it. Strengths: simple GST and e-invoice filing, low cost (₹18,000–₹54,000/year), familiar to every Indian CA, offline-capable, fast data entry. Weaknesses: not a manufacturing ERP — no production planning, no shop floor, no quality, no payroll at scale, no AI, single-user editions create bottlenecks.

When to choose Tally
- •Trader, converter, or very small mill (<10 employees, <5 TPD) where accounting + GST is the only digital need — production runs on Excel and that's fine for now.
- •You're a CA/accountant servicing multiple small clients and Tally's familiarity is non-negotiable.
- •Tight budget (<₹50,000/year for software) with no immediate plan to digitize production.
- •Existing Tally setup works fine and there's no growth pressure or compliance pain forcing change.
When Papyrus BPApp wins
- Growing paper mill (>20 employees, >5 TPD) where Tally + Excel + WhatsApp coordination is causing daily fires.
- Tired of reconciling spreadsheets for OEE, downtime, and trim — want one system, one source of truth.
- Want deckle optimization to recover ₹50 lakh–₹3 crore/year in trim waste — Tally can't help here.
- Need shop floor visibility: which work order is at which machine, who's on which shift, what's the live OEE.
- Compliance burden growing: 50+ employees triggers PF/ESI complexity that Tally Payroll struggles with.
- Want to use AI/IoT/mobile for the mill but Tally's stack is too closed to extend.
- Quality team needs sample tracking, COA generation, NCR/CAPA workflows that Tally doesn't offer.
- Plan to scale to 2+ plants — Papyrus BPApp's multi-tenant architecture is built for this.
Migrating from Tally
Most customers run Papyrus BPApp alongside Tally during the first 3–6 months. Production, deckle, quality, and HR go to Papyrus BPApp first. Tally continues for finance until the team is comfortable, then finance migrates over with auditor-friendly chart-of-accounts mapping. We provide a Tally data import tool (parties, items, opening balances, historical vouchers) so no data is lost. Many customers ultimately keep Tally as a read-only archive for past years while running everything new on Papyrus BPApp.
Frequently asked questions
Is Papyrus BPApp's accounting as good as Tally for my CA?+
Yes. The Finance & GST module covers full GL, AP/AR, journal entries, trial balance, P&L, balance sheet, GSTR-1/3B/9, e-invoice, e-way bill, TDS, TCS, RCM, ITC reconciliation, bank reconciliation, and audit trails. We've reviewed it with practicing CAs and the workflows match Tally's auditor-friendly style — with the bonus of full integration with production data (no manual data entry into Tally from Excel summaries).
Can we keep using Tally and just add Papyrus BPApp for production?+
Yes — this is the most common starting configuration. Papyrus BPApp's Production, Deckle, Quality, Maintenance, and HR modules run independently. Finance summary entries can push to Tally via API or daily export. Many customers run this hybrid for 6–12 months before fully migrating finance into Papyrus BPApp.
How does Papyrus BPApp's e-invoice compare to Tally's?+
Both generate compliant IRN with QR code. Papyrus BPApp's advantage is that the invoice is auto-generated from the sales order, with deckle plan reference, dispatch details, and customer credit check already validated — no manual data entry. Tally requires you to type invoice data in (or import from Excel) before generating IRN.
What about cost vs Tally?+
Tally is dramatically cheaper for pure accounting (₹18,000–₹54,000/year). Papyrus BPApp costs more (₹4–12 lakh/year for a small mill, ₹12–30 lakh for mid mills) — but you're getting a full manufacturing ERP, not just accounting. The deckle optimizer alone typically pays for the entire platform within 6 months on a 30+ TPD mill. The comparison isn't 'Tally vs Papyrus' on price; it's 'Tally + Excel + manual ops' vs 'Papyrus BPApp end-to-end' on total cost and risk.
Will my Tally TDL customizations be lost?+
TDL customizations are Tally-specific scripts and don't directly port. However, every common customization (custom reports, voucher classes, custom fields) has an equivalent in Papyrus BPApp's low-code workflow and reporting engine. During migration we identify your top 5–10 customizations and rebuild them in Papyrus BPApp's framework — typically 1–3 days of work.
What about offline access? Tally works without internet.+
Papyrus BPApp's mobile app supports offline mode for shop floor operations, quality entries, and field service. The web app needs internet for full functionality. For mills in low-connectivity areas, we offer a hybrid deployment where critical production data syncs when connectivity is available. Realistically, most mills have stable internet today and offline-first matters less than it did a decade ago.
